Statement of Need

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a key pathogen in many healthcare-associated infections, infections that occur in up to 10% of hospitalized patients and account for nearly 80,000 deaths annually in the United States. As the epidemiology of MRSA continues to evolve, the current challenge is to use the most appropriate and effective therapeutic and preventive strategies against this pathogen. However, studies show that compliance with such strategies could be vastly improved.

This online educational toolkit provides video footage from an educational roundtable of clinical experts who discuss strategies for prevention and control of MRSA infection in the hospital setting. The goal of this toolkit is to promote a “change model” that incorporates thought, culture, and practice by identifying evidence-based measures, assessing practice against those measures, and implementing interventions for performance improvement in addressing healthcare-associated infections caused by MRSA.

    Learning Objectives

    At the end of this CE activity, participants should be able to:

    • Describe how methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is transmitted in the hospital setting.
    • Consistently use contact precautions when they are caring for hospitalized patients infected with MRSA.
    • Increase the rate at which they treat complicated skin and soft tissue infections as if they are MRSA-infected until proven otherwise by culture results.

    Target Audience

    Physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and health care professionals who are involved in providing care for hospital inpatients with or at risk for acquiring MRSA infection.
