Statement of Need

Medical students and practicing physicians typically receive little to no training in addressing the business of running a clinical practice. Most residents report that they are "somewhat" or "totally unprepared" to handle the business aspects of medicine. In today's increasingly difficult economic climate, this lack of knowledge hampers effective practice management and can increase physician stress and burnout to unmanageable levels.

Physicians are now being held accountable for facilitating a growing range of healthcare reforms; from converting paper records to digital information to managing whole populations of patients while achieving cost-effective care. Practices are also in the midst of qualifying for Stage 1 and 2 of "meaningful use," as directed by the HITECH Act, part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, which directs providers to purchase and implement an electronic health record that meets certain standards, set forth by the act.

As payer reimbursements fall and government regulation increases, pressures mount for physician-run practices to become leaner and more efficient. It is more important than ever for physicians to understand the keys to effectively managing their practices; a well-run practice has clear implications for improved patient care and provider satisfaction.
