Statement of Need

Despite evidence of poor outcomes and significant health care expenditures from the use of potentially inappropriate medications (PIMs) in older adults, they continue to be prescribed at unacceptably high rates in patients aged 65 and over. Many adverse drug events (ADEs) in these patients, both in primary care and long-term care settings, are preventable. And avoiding use of PIMs is one strategy to address these ADEs. We are now at a tipping point with this important patient safety concern, such that a call to action has been raised by patients, clinicians, researchers, and regulatory organizations: PIMs-related guidance has become a fundamental issue for policy and practice.

This Compass Points™ article provides an overview the magnitude of the problem with PIMs and reviews the 2012 American Geriatrics Society Beers' Criteria and the Screening Tool of Older Persons' Potentially Inappropriate Prescriptions (STOPP).
