Statement of Need

According to a recent Institute of Medicine report, Relieving Pain in America: A Blueprint for Transforming Prevention, Care, Education, and Research, pain is a significant public health problem that costs society at least $560 – $635 billion each year. This amount is equal to about $2,000 for each person living in the United States.(1)

While opioids remain a valid and effective analgesic strategy for patients suffering from a wide variety of painful conditions, they are not a panacea. Increasingly, physicians must balance patient expectations of adequate pain control with known limitations of opioid agents, including adverse effects, tolerance, addiction, withdrawal, and drug diversion. There is a variety of options, and knowing the mechanism of pain can inform and direct appropriate treatment.(2)

New approaches to the management of chronic pain require that clinicians understand and apply the new thinking about appropriate and timely treatment.(3) This neuroscienceCME Snack interview with pain expert Daniel Clauw, MD, will enlighten clinicians about the updated strategies for chronic pain.
