Statement of Need

July 28th is World Hepatitis Day 2012. First observed in 2008, this special day raises awareness and focuses on disease prevention, testing, and treatment for viral hepatitis due to hepatitis B or C viruses. Although World Hepatitis Day is a supranational event, it is important for us to step back and evaluate hepatitis care in our own backyard. A recent Institute of Medicine report helps in this regard by identifying practice gaps and outlining a path forward to elevate the delivery of care for viral hepatitis. This Compass Points™ article provides summary facts about viral hepatitis due to hepatitis B or C virus, and then offers a focused discussion of hepatitis C infection; a companion article on chronic hepatitis B will be released in coming months.
