Statement of Need

Many clinicians are unaware of the nonpharmacological therapies for various, chronic medical and psychiatric conditions, and many rarely prescribe them, including such interventions as music
therapy.(1)

Music therapy is described by the American Music Therapy Association as an “established health profession in which music is used within a therapeutic relationship to address physical, emotional, cognitive, and social needs of individuals.”(2) Decades of research in music therapy support its effectiveness in many areas, such as facilitation of movement and overall physical rehabilitation, increasing people's motivation to become engaged in their treatment, providing emotional support for clients and their families, and providing an outlet for the expression of feelings.(2)

This Compass Points™ article introduces clinicians to music therapy and reviews this therapy’s concepts and value. In addition, this article demonstrates some exciting possibilities for patients’ care.
