Statement of Need

Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a movement disorder with negative effects on sleep and daytime activities that affect personal, family, and occupational life. The overall impact of RLS on quality of life is comparable to that of chronic conditions such as depression and diabetes. In addition, misdiagnosis and inappropriate treatment can increase patients' discomfort and pain, leading to overuse of clinical care services.

This neuroscienceCME Snack provides an overview of RLS, emphasizing the salient features that help clinicians accurately detect and promptly treat it, when appropriate.

  • Allen RP, Picchietti D, Hening WA, Trenkwalder C, Walters AS, Montplaisir J. Restless legs syndrome: diagnostic criteria, special considerations, and epidemiology. A report from the restless legs syndrome diagnosis and epidemiology workshop at the National Institutes of Health. Sleep Med. 2003;4(2):101-119. PMID: 14592341.

    Activity Goal

To provide evidence-based content that enables clinicians who encounter patients with suspected or probable RLS to be able to improve diagnosis and treatment of RLS, in accordance with the identified, gaps-based learning objectives for the activity.

At the end of this CE activity, participants should be able to:
