Statement of Need

Women often present with the complaint of loss of sexual desire, but with little awareness of how, when, or why this problem occurred; this can cause a fair amount of distress in patients. Distress is a necessary component to be able to diagnose someone with hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD). In fact, the PRESIDE study showed that 9.5% of women experienced low desire with distress, and that the prevalence of low sexual desire is elevated among surgically and naturally menopausal women versus premenopausal women.(1) However, the determination of HSDD can only be made after taking into account critical factors that affect sexual functioning.(2)

A thorough diagnostic workup and detailed sexual history are necessary in order to rule out a medical (e.g. change in testosterone) or psychiatric (e.g. depression) condition that might be causing the symptoms of HSDD. It is critical that clinicians ask about sexual health as part of a complete patient history—a practice pattern that can help reduce anxiety and put patients at ease.(2)

This CME Outfitters medical simulation puts you—the life-long learner—in the "driver's seat" as the decision-making clinician who is providing care for a virtual patient across two or three clinical encounters. As such, you have the opportunity to put your knowledge into practice with this virtual patient, and then translate your experience to your practice with actual patients with HSDD.

Activity Goal

To provide clinicians with a simulated clinical experience related to the assessment of sexual health as part a routine patient history, and integration of a complete diagnostic work-up to rule out any underlying medical and/or psychiatric conditions that might be causing the symptoms of HSDD.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this CE activity, participants should be able to:

  • Assess sexual health as part of a routine history and physical for all patients.
  • Integrate a complete diagnostic work-up to rule out any underlying medical or psychiatric conditions, which may be causing the symptoms of HSDD.

Financial Support

This activity is supported by an independent educational grant from Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals, Inc.

Target Audience

Physicians, physician assistants, nurses, nurse practitioners, pharmacists, and other nonphysician health care professionals with an interest in women's health and HSDD.
