Statement of Need

Obesity has reached nearly epidemic proportions both in the United States and globally. However, physicians are often unprepared to manage the important problem of obesity and its clinical implications.(1) In order to effectively manage—and ideally prevent—obesity, primary care clinicians must be able to consistently monitor weight in their patients as part of routine clinical practice, integrate lifestyle interventions into overweight and obesity management plans, and appraise new and emerging pharmacologic therapies for the treatment of obesity. These measures will encourage individualized treatment and more effectively modify and maintain long-term weight loss in obese patients.

This Compass Points™ article will attempt to address issues related to routine weight monitoring; appropriate counseling and integration of lifestyle interventions; and appraisal of pharmacologic therapies. To offer readers a comprehensive strategy to manage clinical realities in an obesity epidemic, the article includes both prevention and management tactics to reduce obesity in patient populations.

Activity Goal

To educate clinicians on the importance of routine monitoring of weight and appropriate counseling for weight loss, the integration of lifestyle interventions into management plans for their patients with obesity, and strategies for the appropriate application of evidence-based data on new and emerging pharmacotherapies for the treatment of obesity into individualized management plans to more effectively modify and maintain long-term weight loss.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this CE activity, participants should be able to:

  • Incorporate routine monitoring of weight (as measure of relative increase or decrease in BMI), as well as appropriate questioning and counseling, into routine clinical practice to manage and ideally prevent obesity and related comorbidities.
  • Identify, plan, and integrate lifestyle interventions for the treatment of obesity into management plans delivered through a multidisciplinary team.
  • Appraise new pharmacotherapies for the treatment of obesity, and evaluate strategies for their appropriate application into individualized management plans for patients who are obese.
