Statement of Need

Characterized by episodes of mania, generally interspersed with major depressive episodes, bipolar disorder is a lifelong psychiatric illness. Like other chronic conditions, the need for continuous treatment is critical. In bipolar disorder, the need for continuous treatment was established a number of years ago. However, only in the last decade has adequate focus been placed on best practices needed to achieve it. In accordance with current guidelines, many patients require maintenance treatment following stabilization and remission of a mood episode. Despite this, many patients with bipolar disorder do not receive adequate maintenance pharmacotherapy throughout the maintenance phase for a variety of patient- and clinician-related reasons. Ongoing education regarding strategies that may delay or prevent recurrence is needed to improve outcomes and quality of life for patients with bipolar disorder.
