Sleep disorders and accompanying symptoms of excessive sleepiness not only negatively impact daily functioning, cognitive performance, personal relationships, quality of life, and mood, but also pose a danger to public safety when drowsy drivers get behind the wheel of an automobile. Sleep disorders have been associated with physiologic consequences such as increased insulin resistance, obesity, cardiovascular disease and diabetes. The presentations of sleep-wake disorders can be complex and varied, requiring clinicians to conduct a thorough clinical interview, utilize validated screening tools such as the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS), recognize when a referral for a sleep study is appropriate, and develop a multimodal treatment plan to optimize outcomes. In this neuroscienceCME series, the faculty—who represent both the primary care and specialty perspective—will present real-world cases and provide insights and strategies to managing patients with sleep-wake disorders.
