Evidence-based medicine (EBM) provides a mechanism for obtaining quality evidence for use in addressing case-based clinical questions. The EBM process involves collecting data on a clinical question, critically reviewing it, putting it into context, and then applying it to the patient.(1) The medical literature is large and ever expanding, but available evidence is of varying quality and relevance to particular clinical problems. Therefore, it is not enough for physicians to scan the literature and choose evidence with which to inform their decision-making without appropriately and systematically appraising its value. In this problem-based self-study, participants will be presented with cases and asked to complete the steps in EBM collection and appraisal of evidence.

Participation Instructions
This activity may be completed on its own, but is designed to function as the second part of the three-part series "From Paper to Patient: Applying Clinical Literature to Practice Improvements." For maximum impact, participants are encouraged to view the related activities in this 3-part series and consult the course materials for each activity.

Part 3: Evidence-Based Medicine: Application of Principles to Practice
This self-study practicum consists of a series of self-directed online research exercises based on EBM concepts presented in the two online educational activities associated with this topic. Participants will be presented with two case examples, and must complete five problem-based learning exercises for each case example:
1. PICO the case example
2. Conduct a search using an online database to find an article
3. Read the article and appraise the evidence
4. Explain the finding
5. Calculate statistical data
Estimated completion time for the self-study practicum is 2 hours.
The goal of this activity is to provide mental health practitioners an opportunity to apply evidence-based medicine principles and skills.
At the end of this CE activity, participants should be able to:
- Apply PICO methods to address case-based clinical questions.
- Conduct an appropriate literature search.
- Appraise the evidence obtained and assess it for clinical significance.
