Statement of Need

The treatment goal for alcohol dependence is to increase rates of abstinence. When used in combination with psychosocial support, pharmacologic agents can help committed patients reach this goal. Alcohol dependence, although a chronic disease, is often seen as a "problem" in the background of the patient's other presenting symptoms. Each patient presenting with the signs and symptoms of alcohol dependence also presents with a particular interest or disinterest in recovery, a set of personal circumstances, genetic and environmental predispositions, and variability in overall health status. Faced with this relatively complex diagnostic challenge, healthcare practitioners must decide on the best course of action for each individual. In this neuroscienceCME Clinical Navigator series, experts will address these issues and give clinicians tools that they can utilize in their practice to improve the outcomes of their patients with alcohol dependence.
