Statement of Need

There is a distinct overlap between schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, especially in the area of neurobiology. The same neurotransmitter systems are responsible for the core behaviors that are common to both conditions: energy and interest (norepinephrine); impulse control (5-HT); and drive/psychosis (dopamine). Schizophrenia and BPD also share many of the same medical comorbidities - obesity, diabetes mellitus, and cardiovascular disease - while shared psychiatric comorbidities include anxiety, eating disorders, substance abuse, and personality disorders.

Atypical antipsychotics have an affinity for the serotonergic neurotransmitter system in addition to their effects on the dopamine D2 receptor that may influence clinical outcomes. It may also explain their clinical profile of lower EPS and improvement in cognition, which is not observed with the conventional agents. However, weight gain, increased blood lipids/cholesterol, insulin resistance/ type 2 diabetes, and hyperprolactinemia are emerging as significant treatment-associated concerns with selected agents. In this live and interactive, evidence-based neuroscienceCME VOICE activity, the experts will explore the link between neurotransmitter systems and clinical outcomes to maximize treatment strategies in patients with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.

Activity Goal

To recognize the relationship between neurotransmitter systems and clinical outcomes in patients with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this CE activity, participants should be able to:

  • Recognize the relationship between neurotransmitter systems and clinical outcomes in patients with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.
  • Compare and contrast the pharmacologic properties of antipsychotics in an evidence-based model to identify the most appropriate therapy for each patient.
  • Design and implement a treatment strategy that incorporates non-pharmacologic and pharmacologic strategies to improve outcomes in patients with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.

Target Audience

Physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, nurses, psychologists, social workers, certified case managers, pharmacists, and other healthcare professionals with an interest in mental health.
