Statement of Need

The positive symptoms of schizophrenia, such as hallucinations, delusions, and aggressive symptoms, receive the most clinical attention and are the primary targets for pharmacological treatment. Unfortunately, it is the negative and cognitive symptoms that persist longer than positive symptoms, are more difficult to treat, and contribute to chronicity and disability.¹

Research has recently focused on studying negative symptoms, and nonpharmacological approaches to cognitive improvement in schizophrenia have demonstrated some positive change. However, HCPs do not focus enough on these “other” symptoms of schizophrenia or on the metabolic side effects of many medications used to treat this illness.

• Evaluate the efficacy, safety, and tolerability profiles of recent FDA-approved agents to treat schizophrenia.
• Incorporate the use of novel therapies into optimal treatment strategies to manage the cognitive symptoms of schizophrenia.
