Statement of Need

As current treatments for schizophrenia continue to improve, it is helpful to understand their evolution within the framework of earlier generations of treatment. Recognizing the similarities and differences in the issues faced in early trials of conventional antipsychotics compared to the challenges presented by atypical antipsychotics today may offer new insights and linkages to efficacy, safety, and patient choice. In this evidence-based psychCME TALK activity, George Simpson, MD, a pioneer in the development of the first generation of antipsychotics, joins Peter Weiden, MD, to present cutting-edge data surrounding recent advances in the management of schizophrenia while offering a historical context that may provide a better understanding of how clinicians have arrived at their current treatment strategies.

Activity Goal

To utilize lessons learned throughout the development of antipsychotics to gain insights into the efficacy and safety of current atypical antipsychotics.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this CE activity, participants should be able to:

  • Provide a historical context of the evolution of antipsychotics that offer insights into the treatment of schizophrenia.
  • Examine data comparing the efficacy of atypical antipsychotics in the treatment of positive, negative, and depressive symptoms in patients with schizophrenia.
  • Compare and contrast the impact of atypical antipsychotics on metabolic parameters.
  • Design a treatment strategy that provides optimal management of symptomatology without exacerbating metabolic disorders.

Target Audience

Physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, nurses, psychologists, social workers, certified case managers, pharmacists, and other healthcare professionals with an interest in mental health.
