Statement of Need

Most clinicians initiate antipsychotic therapy for their patients from a perspective that integrates scientific evidence with experience. But many times, a lack of treatment response or treatment emergent side effects warrant a switch to a different agent. In the CATIE trial, 74% of the 1432 patients discontinued their medication within 18 month of initiation.(1) Side effects such as EPS, sedation, galactorrhea, amenorrhea, weight gain, and dyslipidemia may not only affect quality of life, but may also put the patient at increased risk for medical disorders including cardiovascular disease. The process of switching is difficult and carries with it an element of risk. Switching requires planning, appropriate dosing that considers receptor binding, and the active involvement of the patient and caregivers. In this evidence-based neuroscienceCME TV activity, the experts will use a case-based format to explore the complexities of switching patients to a new antipsychotic when side effects and symptom control impact quality of life and patient outcomes.

Activity Goal

To utilize appropriate switching techniques for patients who do not achieve the optimal therapeutic response or have treatment emergent side effects.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this CE activity, participants should be able to:

  • Describe factors that lead to discontinuation of atypical antipsychotics.
  • Identify treatment-emergent side effects that may necessitate a strategy for switching antipsychotic therapy.
  • Employ techniques for switching antipsychotics that minimize risk and improve patient outcomes.

Target Audience

Physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, nurses, psychologists, social workers, certified case managers, pharmacists, and other healthcare professionals with an interest in mental health.
